The ?game of kings?

Chess is cool” is not something every student hears from their peers, but for the Wednesday night chess crowd at the Elkridge Branch Library in Howard County, the classic game of wit and strategy also has a social focus.

“It gives your mind an actual challenge,” says Terrance Hall, 14, of Elkridge.

While bonds are formed and strengthened between members of the Youth Chess Club and many keep coming back for the atmosphere, the centuries-old “game of kings” gives them something to master.

Hall and his fellow chess players are participating in an ancient ritual.

Developed in the Southern Europe in the second half of the 15th century, International Chess evolved from similar, much older games of Indian or Chinese origin.

The program also provides a steady stream of volunteer chess teachers to help them on that path, though they are always looking for more willing mentors. Those interested in helping out should contact Amanda Gardner at 443-745-2793.
