Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said those responsible for Donald Trump’s rise must “bear that responsibility going forward.”

Cruz spent months praising Trump on the campaign trail while competing against him before taking a more combative tone, but told radio host Michael Berry his only regret was that he didn’t win.

“There’s time for recriminations and you know everyone who is responsible for the rise of Donald Trump, they will bear that responsibility going forward,” Cruz said. “But there were more than a few players who played a disproportionate role in that rise.”

The senator continued to say he’s focused on combatting the narrative that Americans are witnessing the death of the conservative movement, which he instead believes is “strong and thriving.”

Cruz said he would attend the GOP convention in Cleveland, but has no knowledge of whether he will have any speaking or active role. He said he felt obligated to attend to cheer on his delegates and thank them.
