Several vehicles and scooters were set on fire in Northwest Washington early Wednesday, clogging up morning traffic a major artery into the District, officials said.
Fire crews responded to a fire in the 3500 block of 16th Street NW and found three scooters chained to a tree fully engulfed in flames, said D.C. fire department spokesman Pete Piringer. The firefighters put out the blaze in 20 minutes and called in fire investigators to check out the suspicious nature of the fire.
Just as the fire engine pulled back into the fire station, they received another call for a fire on the same block of 16th Street, Piringer said.
Police found two vehicles totally engulfed in flames. Firefighters took another 20 minutes to put out those fires, which also damaged two nearby vehicles.
Police and fire investigators were on the scene and traffic was detoured until about 8 a.m. Wednesday.
