House Majority Whip Steve Scalise remains in critical condition following another operation, which wrapped up Thursday evening.

The update was sent out about an hour before his Republican teammates were set to hit the field at Nationals Park for the annual Congressional Baseball Game.

About an hour later MedStar Washington Hospital Center put out an official statement confirming Scalise is still in critical condition, but has improved over the last 24 hours. He will also require additional surgeries.

“Earlier today, Congressman Steve Scalise underwent a second surgery related to his internal injuries and a broken bone in his leg,” the statement read. “He remains in critical condition, but has improved in the last 24 hours. The Congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time. At the request of the family, we will continue to provide periodic updates.”

Scalise has been in critical condition — the most serious for a hospital patient — since he arrived at MedStar on Wednesday morning. He has reportedly received up to three surgeries; the hospital statement indicated that two have been dedicated to his internal organs and his broken leg.

The Louisiana lawmaker was shot in the hip around 7 a.m. ET Wednesday at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Va. The hospital says Scalise suffered internal organ damage and has fractured bones.

Earlier Thursday afternoon, another one of the shooting victims, lobbyist Matt Mika, was upgraded from critical to serious condition.
