WORKERS ARE PUTTING THE FINISHING TOUCHES ON SARAJEVO’S LATIN BRIDGE. IT WAS HERE A HUNDRED YEARS AGO THAT AN ASSASSINATION SPARKED A WORLD WAR.

ON SATURDAY, THE BOSNIAN CAPITAL WILL HOLD A SYMBOLIC SHOW–RECREATING THE EVENTS OF 1914. THE DAY THAT GAVRILO PRINCIP PULLED THE TRIGGER–KILLING THE HEIR TO THE THRONE–ARCHDUKE FRANZ FERDINAND AND HIS WIFE SOPHIE.

A FRENCH ARTIST IS DIRECTING THE CENTENNIAL PROJECT. HE LIKENS THE POLITICAL DIVIDES IN BOSNIA TO THE HISTORIC STRUGGLES BETWEEN HIS NATIVE FRANCE AND NEIGHBORING GERMANY.

“We fought three wars at the end of 19th century, two wars in the 20th century, but now we are strategic partners for Europe. So, the message here is about the future, is maybe about also entering EU (European Union) for Bosnia. (EDIT) And, of course, it is about peace and reconciliation.”

THE COMMEMORATION WILL INCLUDE THE LEADERS OF AUSTRIA AND HUNGARY, AS WELL AS A DELEGATION FROM THE U-S.

SERBIANS ARE HOLDING THEIR OWN CEREMONIES. FRIDAY THEY UNVEILED A STATUE TO PRINCIP. THE YOUNG SERB NATIONALIST ADVOCATED THE UNIFICATION OF BOSNIA AND SERBIA.

THE HEAD OF THE SERBIAN CEREMONY SAYS PRINCIP IS A PRIDE OF THE SERB’S PAST.

MEANWHILE, OTHER ARTIFACTS FROM THE ASSASSINATION ARE ON DISPLAY IN AUSTRIA.

VIENNA’S AUSTRIAN ARMY MUSEUM IS SHOWING THE CAR ARCHDUKE FERDINAND WAS RIDING IN WHEN HE WAS KILLED. A BULLET HOLE CLEARLY VISIBLE.

VISITORS CAN ALSO SEE THE BLOODSTAINED SHIRT WORN BY FERDINAND AND GUNS USED BY PRINCIP.

“Of course these items are more than 100 years old and it’s a really, really hard challenge to keep them in a very good condition. Therefore, we decided to have only the uniform on permanent display and the shirt is only shown for two weeks per year.”
