University chancellor issues apology for email condemning attacks on Jewish people

A New Jersey university chancellor apologized for sending a message to his school condemning the recent rise in attacks on Jewish people.

“Recent incidents of hate directed toward Jewish members of our community again remind us of what history has to teach us,” an email from Rutgers University-New Brunswick Chancellor Dr. Christopher J. Molloy addressed to the entire student body said earlier this week, according to the Daily Caller. “Tragically, in the last century alone, acts of prejudice and hatred left unaddressed have served as the foundation for many atrocities against targeted groups around the world.”

“If you have been adversely impacted by anti-Semitic or any other discriminatory incidents in our community, please do not hesitate to reach out to our counseling and other support services on campus. Our behavioral health team stands ready to support you through these challenging times,” the email added.

The next day, the chancellor sent a second email to students apologizing for the previous email.

“In hindsight, it is clear to us that the message failed to communicate support for our Palestinian community members. We sincerely apologize for the hurt that this message has caused,” the second email said. “Our diversity must be supported by equity, inclusion, antiracism, and the condemnation of all forms of bigotry and hatred, including anti-Semitism and Islamophobia.”

At the conclusion of the email, the chancellor wrote he would work to regain the student body’s trust and be “more sensitive and balanced” in the future.

The apology came after an Instagram post from a pro-Palestinian student group slammed the statement supporting Jewish people.

Attacks against Jewish people have been on the rise — up 75% over the last two weeks, according to the Anti-Defamation League — as well as several incidents of pro-Palestinian mobs swarming and attacking Jewish people.

Earlier this month, a mob of roughly 30 Palestinians jumped out of a car in Los Angeles and attacked diners at a restaurant who identified themselves as Jewish.
