On their face, Virginia’s new bad-driver fees seem like a good idea. Those who violate the law should be punished accordingly, right? But having to shell out $1,000 for a speeding ticket seems a bit excessive! What makes no sense to me is that state lawmakers and Gov. Kaine made the fees applicable only to Virginians. On top of that, paying the fees may force many low-income residents to choose between paying their rent and driving. The likely outcome of that would be people paying their rent, letting their licenses be revoked and driving anyway. The outcry in the Commonwealth is growing, and the folks down in Richmond will no doubt bend to the voters’ will. Until then, be sure not to exceed the speed limit! (Not that you usually would.)
