Caps 2, Devils 1

The Devils pulled to within a goal in the second period with a nice counterattack of their own. A Brooks Laich shot from the right wing was blocked and set up a 3-on-2 the other way. A pair of crisp passes later, forward Brian Rolston whipped a shot past Theodore from the right side at 8:18.

Goalie Martin Brodeur helped his New Jersey keep it that way minutes later. The Caps peppered him with five shots during a power play – Green thought he’d even scored on a one-timer in the slot from Nicklas Backstrom. But they left empty-handed and that gives the Devils a fair shot headed into the third. Washington was 0-for-2 on the power play in that period. Their penalty-kill unit, meanwhile, is 2-for-2 and has allowed just one shot. Overall, shots are 18-14 in favor of the Caps.
