Washington Post invokes mass shooting victims in call to ban ‘assault weapons’

The Washington Post is using the victims of mass shootings to pressure Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to “do something” about gun violence.

The newspaper published an editorial on Tuesday listing the names of dozens of victims of mass shootings in the past two decades. The Washington Post‘s board used the victims of mass shootings to push President Trump and McConnell to pass stricter legislation on gun control.

“What if there was a mass shooting in the United States not once or twice or four or six times monthly, but every single day, a big one, the kind that electrifies social media and squats for days on Page 1 — would that be enough to move Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell from his insistent inertia on gun safety?” Washington Posts editorial board wrote.

“No, no single law would end gun violence. But there are reasonable, obvious measures that would help,” the editorial board continued. “For example: Ban the sale of military-grade assault weapons. Unneeded by civilians, they are a blight on the nation, their ready availability a national disgrace.”

The editorial comes in the wake of a Saturday mass shooting in West Texas. The shooter stole a mail truck and shot indiscriminately at others, killing seven and injuring at least 19. Police eventually cornered the shooter and killed him in a firefight.
