Minutes after Republicans in Congress passed a bill to partially repeal and replace Obamacare, Tom Perriello, a Democratic candidate for Virginia governor, released a 30-second ad criticizing GOP leadership for crushing “affordable healthcare” like an ambulance being crushed in a junkyard behind him.
“Republican leaders are trying to do this to affordable healthcare,” Perriello, says over the crunching noise of the junkyard crusher at work.
Perriello, a former congressman, said he voted for Obamacare “because it was wrong that a million Virginians weren’t covered, while insurance companies held all the power.” Now, Perriello said, he’s running for governor “because it’s wrong that most Virginia incomes haven’t gone up in 20 years.”
“Together, we can stop Donald Trump, raise wages, and build an economy that works for everyone,” Perriello said. “And we’ll make sure this never happens in Virginia.”
The ad, titled “Ambulance,” was filmed in one live take and will begin running next week, according to Perriello’s team.
Perriello is running to replace Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who cannot serve consecutive terms according to state law. He will face off against Ralph Northam, Virginia lieutenant governor, in the Democratic primary in June.
Perriello has the backing of progressive darling Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. Earlier this week he released an ad to tout his close ties to former President Barack Obama.
