White House press secretary rejects comparing her election skepticism to Trump’s

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre bristled at criticism regarding tweets she published questioning the results of previous elections as President Joe Biden scrutinizes Republicans who undermine the 2020 contest.

“That comparison that you made is just ridiculous,” Jean-Pierre told reporters Tuesday. “I was talking specifically at that time of what was happening with voting rights and what was in danger of voting rights.”

Jean-Pierre repeated that she had been “clear” that former President Donald Trump won his election against 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, as Republican Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp did against 2018 Democratic gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams.

“Let’s not forget what happened on Jan. 6, 2021,” she said. “We saw an insurrection, a mob that was incited by the person who occupied this campus, this facility at that time, and it was an attack on our democracy.”

“That was the danger that we were seeing at the time,” the press secretary said. “That’s what the president has called out, and that’s what he’s going to continue to call out.”

Biden has amplified his condemnations of so-called “Make America Great Again” Republicans, the definition of which has evolved but appears to include those who have denied what occurred on Jan. 6.

“Majority of Americans agree with this president on protecting our democracy, protecting our freedom, and protecting our rights,” she said. “That’s what we’re talking about today, and that’s what the president’s going to focus on.”

Republicans have contended Jean-Pierre’s appointment to replace Jen Psaki behind the podium is problematic since she described the 2016 election as being “stolen” and accused Kemp of undercutting Abrams in their 2018 contest.
