CNN medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta said Tuesday that President Trump is at risk of insomnia, irritability and other health problems if he really is drinking 12 Diet Cokes each day.
“It can lead to irritability, it can lead to insomnia,” Gupta said on CNN.
“Especially toward the media?” CNN host Chris Cuomo asked.
The New York Times reported Sunday that Trump eats a lot of junk food and washes it down with “a dozen Diet Cokes” every day. That same report said Trump watches as much as eight hours of television a day, something Trump denied.
Gupta said all that Diet Coke would give him a lot of caffeine every day, much more than any doctor would recommend. He said another danger is that drinking diet soda makes the body crave more sugar.
“No doctor, no person would recommend, the makers of Coca Cola would not recommend drinking four liters of this stuff in a day,” he said.
Trump’s former campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, said in his own book that Trump would often eat two McDonald’s Big Macs and two Fillet-o-Fish sandwiches, and a chocolate shake. Gupta said that isn’t healthy either.
“These are sandwiches that have 120 chemicals in them, so they’re fake food,” he said. “They’re not even real food.”
