Lauren Boebert says Biden put 13 service members in coffins at State of the Union

Colorado Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert was booed during President Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech on Tuesday after she burst out, accusing Biden of putting 13 service members in coffins.

The line came after Biden talked about veterans suffering side effects from toxic “burn pits” in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Headaches. Numbness. Dizziness. A cancer that would put them in a flag-draped coffin,” Biden said.

Boebert stood up and interjected, “You put them in, 13 of them.”

It was an apparent reference to the 13 members of the military who were killed in Afghanistan during a bombing outside the Kabul airport during a chaotic troop withdrawal.

The outburst drew widespread boos.

“There are a couple members of the Republican caucus, you know who they both are — who will do anything to get attention,” Philadelphia Democratic Rep. Brendan Boyle told the Washington Examiner after the speech. “They’re desperate for attention, desperate for clicks. I’d rather just focus on the substance and not any of that garbage.”

Boebert could face formal condemnation for the outburst.

In 2009, Rep. Joe Wilson yelled out, “You Lie!” during President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address after Obama said that his healthcare reform plan would not insure illegal immigrants. The House then passed a “resolution of disapproval” about his remarks.

This is the second year in a row that Boebert, a Republican firebrand, drew attention at the State of the Union. Last year, she unfurled a “space blanket” in protest of Biden’s handling of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Boebert filmed a video on the House floor after the speech about social distancing no longer being observed. Filming videos and taking photos on the floor is technically against House rules but rarely enforced.

Boebert also made a literal statement with her outfit, wearing a black dress and a black shawl with “drill baby drill” written on the back in silver.
