Dim Bulb: Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash.

WHAT: The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee chairwoman recently sent a fundraising letter asking for a five-figure contribution from David and Charles Koch, who own and operate Koch Industries. She also left a voicemail indicating that a large contribution could result in an invite to an island retreat with Democratic senators in September, saying, “We’d love to have you join us.” WHY IT’S DIM: Democrats have frequently attacked the Koch brothers, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., recently sent his own fundraising letter accusing Republicans of trying to “force through their extreme agenda faster than you can say ‘Koch Brothers.’ ”

CURE: Trying to raise money by bashing the Kochs in one letter and asking them for a contribution in another may not be the best strategy for the DSCC.
