Queen Elizabeth II omits mention of Trump’s planned visit to UK

Queen Elizabeth II omitted President Trump’s name as she discussed upcoming state visits in her speech before the state opening of Parliament on Wednesday, prompting some speculation the planned visit had been canceled.

Elizabeth did mention one planned state visit from Spain’s King Felipe and Queen Letizia in July in her speech detailing the government’s legislative agenda for the next two years, which generally includes mention of state visits.

A Downing Street spokesperson told CNN that was no change in plans for Trump’s visit, and that it wasn’t mentioned because the date hasn’t been finalized.

“The invitation for the state visit has been extended and it wasn’t mentioned in the speech as no date has been decided upon yet,” the spokesperson said.

British ministers told BBC that Trump’s visit went unmentioned due to the same reason.

British Prime Minister Theresa May received backlash after she invited Trump for a state visit a week after his inauguration in January. More than 1.8 million people in the U.K. signed a petition requesting that the visit be canceled. The White House denied reports that Trump told May he would not go if there were large protests against him.

May reaffirmed that the invitation was still open after Trump criticized London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s response to terror attacks in London earlier this month.
