Transgender resource group leader fired from Netflix after organizing upcoming walkout

The leader of a transgender resource group was reportedly fired from Netflix on Friday after organizing an upcoming walkout to protest the streaming company’s handling of Dave Chappelle’s special The Closer.

The employee was fired for allegedly leaking metrics about the special to the media, the company said.

These metrics included how much Netflix paid for the special and its viewership statistics, according to the report.

The unnamed employee’s dismissal was confirmed by Netflix.

“We have let go of an employee for sharing confidential, commercially sensitive information outside the company,” a company spokesperson said, the Verge reported. “We understand this employee may have been motivated by disappointment and hurt with Netflix, but maintaining a culture of trust and transparency is core to our company.”

Data leaks such as the one alleged are a rarity at Netflix because the company instructs employees that the company can only thrive if data remains internal, according to a report.

The ex-employee and others in the resource group had pushed transgender employees and transgender allies at Netflix to walk out of work on Oct. 20 in protest of Chappelle’s “transphobic” special, the report said.

Despite Netflix stating the cause for the employee’s termination was not related to the walkout, some are not convinced.

“All these white people are going around talking to the press and speaking publicly on Twitter, and the only person who gets fired is the Black person who was quiet the entire time,” a former employee said. “That’s absurd, and just further shows that Black trans people are the ones being targeted in this conversation.”
