Leelanau County board says no thanks to growth

SUTTONS BAY, Mich. (AP) — Business leaders are criticizing a decision by the Leelanau County commission to abolish its economic development corporation and reject a partnership with nearby Grand Traverse County designed to promote growth.

Meeting in Suttons Bay on April 8, commissioners said the northwestern Lower Peninsula county is wealthy enough already, they don’t want growth and it’s up to people to find their own jobs and businesses to make their own plans.

Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce President Doug Luciani tells the Traverse City Record-Eagle (http://bit.ly/15lvWUx ) the vote could send the message “the county is closed for business.”

Suttons Bay Chamber of Commerce President Karen Pontius says she’s “very surprised” by the decision to dissolve the development board and says volunteer groups like hers lack the resources to promote economic development single-handedly.
