GLENVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — More than two dozen members of a New York Army National Guard bomb disposal unit are headed north of the border to help Canada get rid of some old explosives.
Members of the 1108th Ordnance Company based at the Scotia-Glenville Armed Forces Reserve Center in Schenectady County leave for Goose Bay, Ontario on Saturday to help the Canadian military remove bombs from a former training area.
The unit specializes in bomb disposal missions using robots to disarm the types of improvised explosive devices used by insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan. They also are trained to deal with mines and other types of explosives.
Soldiers in the unit are holding a news conference Tuesday morning at the Armed Forces Reserve Center to discuss their mission.
