In our instant age, where a huge celebrity can share his or her innermost thoughts in seconds, it’s hard to keep up pretenses unless you can afford to have a team of fact-checking, error-proofing minions at all times around you. Facebook, and especially Twitter, have seemingly brought down a type of protective screen of magic between those who fawn and the fawned-over — in some cases to dastardly effects (did anyone really need to see the business end of Charlie Sheen’s “companion” from the night before he was rushed to the hospital, for instance?).
However, there are some hidden gems in The Twitter. People you may have wondered about who turn out to say witty, funny, pithy things. People who are probably quite busy, but they reply to your Tweet.
Performance-artist type of individuals, whose Tweets are so outlandish and outré that there is little else to do but just laugh and enjoy the Twitstream.
Things/Tweeps to enjoy from around the DC area:
1. The Tweets you can find when you do a hashtag search for #teammckenna (Dan Snyder gives much food for thought lately. And by “food for thought” I mean, “boy do some people with more money than sense know how to dig a hole deep.”
2. Adrian Higgins (@adrian_higgins), the Post gardening maven, and his charming wackiness. Someone who Tweets about his sprouted leeks has a special place in my heart.
3. Crazily charming and all over the place, Rachael King (@livitluvit) is worth following, because of the modifiers at the beginning of this sentence. Also, because her boyfriend says funny things. Also, cats.
4. Because every once in a while you need to read a random assortment of bizarre and absorbing websites: @monkeyrotica, a frequent commenter around the interwebs is a fascinating follow.
5. Oh and hey– I’m on Twitter too! Follow me! @MmeMeow
Don’t blame me if you never get up off the couch again. After all, that’s what smartphones are for.
