Driver killed, five seriously injured in Howard crash

A Howard man was killed and several of his passengers were seriously injured when a speeding driver crossed into oncoming traffic on Frederick Road and struck their vehicle head on, Howard police said Friday.

Milton Stanley Bowens Sr., of the 1100 block of Shaffersville Road in Mt. Airy, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 7:30 p.m. accident Thursday on Frederick Road near East Daisy Road in Lisbon, police said.

A passenger in Bowens’ Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle, Adrian Jones, 40, of the same address, was in critical condition Friday at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore City, police said.

Other passengers in the Ford included Corin Disney, 16, who was in serious condition at Shock Trauma and Jasmin Disney, 13, who was in serious condition at Johns Hopkins Hospital, police said.

The accident occurred when a speeding 2006 BMW, driven by Joel Nathaniel Wareham, 22, of Martinsburg, WV.,  crossed the double yellow centerline several times while passing cars on the road.

The BMW at one point went into the westbound lane and struck the eastbound Ford head on at such a severe impact that the BMW’s engine fell into the middle of Frederick Road.

Wareham and his passenger, Joshua Booth, 20, of Laytonsville, were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the BMW, police said.

Both were listed in serious but stable condition at Shock Trauma on Friday, police said.

The police investigation is continuing and charges against Wareham are pending.
