Caps 2, Hurricanes 2
That one turned in a hurry. Caps were down 2-0 and it could have been 3-0 when Tuomo Ruutu pushed home a shot on a power play late in the second period. Goal was waved off. It looked like Ruutu kicked it and then it deflected off Mike Green’s skate. I could have the rule wrong, but I assumed that would make the goal good Apparently not. Will check to see if I’m misunderstanding it. Just a few minutes later Nicklas Backstrom hit Alex Semin with a sweet stretch pass. Semin had his initial shot stopped by Cam Ward, but stuck with it and roofed the rebound. That goal came with just .6 second left – a straight dagger for the Hurricanes.
Defenseman Tim Gleason is back on the ice. He took a puck to the face on an Alex Ovechkin shot in the first period. Gleason wearing a full face shield and a nasty, nasty looking gash above his upper lip. Lot of stitches involves in that one. Semin, by the way, now has 21 career goals against Carolina. For the season he is up to 13 goals in 23 games – 27 points overall. That’s some serious production. Now, if they could just keep him on the ice. Alex Ovechkin and Jeff Schultz assisted on Semin’s first goal at 13:07 when he roofed a wicked wrister over Cam Ward’s shoulder. Schultz kept the puck in the zone at even strength and Ovechkin fed him the pass. Washington has outshot the Canes 26-12 so far. Ward is keeping his team in it right now – the second strong game by an opposing goalie after Ryan Miller shut out the Caps 3-0 on Wednesday.
