Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a nonprofit ethics watchdog group, opened a Freedom of Information Act request surrounding Jan 6.
CREW requested communications between Gen. Charles A. Flynn and retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn. In addition, it requested communications between Lt. Gen. Walter Piatt, Maj. Gen. Christopher LaNeve, former U.S. Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy, and former acting Secretary of Defense Chris Miller.
“These records would shed substantial light on the level of interference from individuals like Gen. Michael Flynn who expressed repeated support for former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election,” CREW’s statement read.
“We’ve launched [an] investigation into Michael Flynn and his brother and what happened on January 6th,” CREW tweeted Thursday.

Col. Earl G. Matthews sparked the request when he publicly took aim at the report from the Department of Defense. Matthews served as a top official with the District of Columbia National Guard on the day of the insurrection. After reading the DOD report in November, he claimed it was “replete with factual inaccuracies,” alleging Charles Flynn lied to Congress from the start.
Now, CREW is requesting the communications between both Flynns to find out if Charles postponed the National Guard’s deployment at his brother’s request and to obtain the “full knowledge of how the insurrection unfolded.”
