Eggspectation is a Canadian-based restaurant chain that charmed one Maryland resident so much that he bought a franchise and opened up shop in Ellicott City.
Eggspectation serves breakfast all day, so anytime you have a craving for a fluffy omelet, this is the place. The Bloody Marys come in a mug dipped in Old Bay with a huge stalk of celery thrown in. The mimosas, champagne mixed with orange juice, are also a great way to cheer up a bleary morning.
Despite its self-proclaimed specialty in breakfast fare, we went during the dinner hour.
The mixed greens and tomato salad came tossed with a sweet and tangy house vinaigrette, sliced cucumbers and olives. Unlike most house salads, which are made with iceberg lettuce, this plate was full of arugula and spinach.
The crab dip, beautifully served in a sizable bread bowl with tart red grapes as decor, was thick and creamy. Lumps of crab meat filled each toasted slice of French bread served with the dish.
For dinner, we ordered the grilled chicken club and the steak and fries.
The steak, a center-cut 12-ounce sirloin, tasted as if it had been aged, but not in a good way. Unfortunately, it tasted devoid of spices or seasoning, and we had to send this back even after salting it.
To compensate for the lacking steak, the waiter promptly served a Chesapeake omelette that was stuffed with crabmeat, onions and green and red peppers. Each bite of the fluffy eggs had a hint of cream and contained a good balance of chopped veggies and flaky crab meat.
Grilled, oval-shaped potatoes and slices of cantaloupe, orange and pineapple enhanced Eggspectation?s Maryland take on the traditional omelet.
Only the slightly damp toast detracted from a fresh club sandwich made of a large, juicy grilled chicken breast stacked between crisp strips of bacon, creamy mayonnaise and crisp lettuce.
As always at Eggspectation, there was a choice of nine different desserts. The generous slice of red velvet cake with cream cheese icing was decadent, served with tufts of whipped cream and a sprinkling of powdered sugar. The cake was moist and thick, and the icing was sweet.
As discovered, any time is a good time for Eggspectation.
