George Allen’s list of endorsements is starting to read like a “who’s who?” of 2008 Republican presidential hopefuls.
Former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee emailed Allen’s supporters Wednesday morning in a final push for campaign donations before the quarter ends Friday. Allen is the frontrunner in the Republican primary for Virginia’s open U.S. Senate race.
“George is the only one in this race that has a clear vision and pro-growth plan to make America competitive again and help businesses create millions of new jobs,” said Thompson, an actor known for his role on the long-running TV show “Law and Order.”
Thompson’s endorsement comes on the heels of a similar letter from former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani on Sept. 20. Both Thompson and Giuliani launched failed bids for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008.
Allen, a former governor, is looking to win the back the U.S. Senate seat he lost to retiring Democratic Sen. Jim Webb in 2006. Allen is likely to face former Gov. Tim Kaine in the general election next November, but must get through a primary that includes a handful of Tea Party candidates trying to paint Allen as a high-spending Republican.
“This race is going to be tight and will most likely determine who controls the U.S. Senate,” Thompson wrote.
Senate Democrats, who caucus with two indepenents, are clinging to a 53-47 majority after losing several seats in the 2010 elections.
