As part of their big marketing push for the upcoming Winter Classic outdoor match against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Washington Capitals will be at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink on Sunday.
The event kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with an appearance by Slapshot and complimentary hot chocolate. At 11 a.m. the Caps will open with a skills demonstration. At noon, folks can take to the ice with the players in an hour-long open skate.
And no — Alex Ovechkin won’t be there but here’s who will: Karl Alzner, Nicklas Backstrom, John Carlson and Marcus Johansson, as well as assistant coach Dean Evason.
Also, the first 200 fans in line will receive free admission. Skate rentals are $3.
The Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh will be held on New Year’s Day.
