Fears over a possible bankruptcy are not thwarting General Growth Properties Inc.’s plans to redevelop Town Center in Columbia.
“We’re going to continue with our pursuit,” Greg Hamm, GGP’s regional vice president and general manager of Columbia, told The Examiner on Wednesday. “I’ve said all along, that more than ever, a good plan is needed to guide the future of Columbia.”
In October, GGP submitted its official plan for a 30-year revitalization of Town Center, calling for a multi-phase project consisting of 5,500 new residences, about 1 million square feet of retail development, about 5 million square feet of office development, 640 hotel rooms and new cultural amenities.
The offices, residences and retail will be intermixed within five neighborhoods.
The plan was sent to the Howard County Department of Planning and Zoning, which is expected to issue its own report on the plan.
The county planning board then will host public meetings and work sessions on the plan and make recommendations based in part on that feedback to the Howard County Council.
