TAMAR, which stands for Trauma, Addictions, Mental Health and Recovery — a Maryland public mental health program, has been recognized with a national HOPE award by the Center for Mental Health Services.
TAMAR, which serves people at least 18 years old in detention centers, educates and treats those with a history of physical and/or sexual abuse, mental health condition or alcohol or drug abuse.
In giving the award, CMHS said the state’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s efforts to help program participants re-enter their communities is “laudable and represents an important cultural shift.” The award was one of four given, and Maryland was the only state recognized.
