Rhode Island Sen. Jack Reed believes President Trump testifying in front of Congress to tell his side of the story would raise too many separation of powers questions.
The Democratic senator told “Fox News Sunday” that Trump should only speak about the investigation to Special Counsel Robert Mueller because presidents should not testify in front of Congress.
“That raises the issue of separation of powers, frankly,” Reed said. “At that point, history would suggest that’s not done often.”
Reed added, “Special Prosecutor Mueller is charged to conduct this investigation and I believe he’s the appropriate person to conduct this investigation.”
Trump told reporters Friday he would be willing to testify under oath if he was called by Congress to tell his side of the story about conversations he had with former FBI Director James Comey.
Reed said Trump should be deposed by Mueller under oath, but shouldn’t only talk about Comey.
“The deposition is not just about his conversations with Mr. Comey. There’s questions about his conversations with Director of National Intelligence Dan Coates, Adm. [Mike] Rogers the [National Security Agency] director, his relationship with Paul Manafort,” Reed said.
“By the time Special Prosecutor Mr. Mueller is read to depose or ask the president to speak under oath, there will be a myriad of questions.”
