New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries said Democrats have a duty to pursue impeachment even with vanishing support from the public in several recent polls.
During an interview on Fox News Sunday, host Chris Wallace confronted Jeffries about the lack of bipartisanship in the impeachment effort so far.
“You’ve been making your best case to the public for two months now. You just finished 30 hours of televised hearings, 12 witnesses, and the public apparently isn’t buying it at this point,” Wallace said, later adding, “It’s clear that there is none of the bipartisan support that Speaker Pelosi said, for months, was essential to impeachment.”
Jeffries, 49, replied with polls of his own claiming that 50% supported impeachment with only 43% opposed, but failed to counter Wallace’s point that there was no bipartisan desire to see President Trump impeached.
“Our job is to follow the fact, apply the law, be guided by the U.S. Constitution, and present the truth to the American people, no matter where it leads because no one is above the law,” said Jeffries. “That’s what we have been doing. That’s what we are doing. That’s what we’re gonna continue to do moving forward.”
Jeffries is one of the Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee who will be handling the next phase of the impeachment process as soon as the House Intelligence Committee hands over its report from their hearings.
