STORYLINE

Thousands of Mosul residents were on Thursday fleeing violence in Iraq’s second largest city after Al-Qaida-inspired militants seized the area on Tuesday.

Hundreds of cars carrying displaced Iraqis passed through a checkpoint around 25 miles from Irbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

The checkpoint in Aski Kalak was manned by Kurdish Peshmerga forces, who inspected cars as they drove by.

A tent camp for displaced Mosul residents was also set up near the border with Kurdistan.

Iraqi soldiers began to flee two days ago following ISIL’s advance.

They abandoned their posts and yielded ground once controlled by US forces.

The militants and their allies, among them local tribesmen, also hold the city of Fallujah and other pockets of the Sunni-dominated Anbar province to the west of Baghdad.
