WILTON, N.Y. (AP) — The closing of a state prison north of Albany could affect future operations of the nearby historic site where President Ulysses S. Grant died.

Mount McGregor Correctional Facility in Saratoga County is scheduled to close Saturday.

The Grant Cottage State Historic Site shares a mountaintop with McGregor and relies on state prison officials for utilities and other services. Grant wrote his autobiography there before dying of throat cancer in 1885.

The Friends of Ulysses S. Grant tell the Times-Union of Albany (http://bit.ly/1t4ZhNZ ) that the prison’s closing will have no impact on its 2014 season.

But board president Tim Welch says they’re still not sure whether the state and its parks department will help with services now performed by the prison agency. Welch said he’s hopeful.
