UPDATED: Multiple police officers shot in Philadelphia shooting

Multiple police officers were hospitalized after being shot in Philadelphia’s Nicetown-Tioga section on Wednesday, according to officials.

Six officers were hit by gunfire on the 3700 block of North 15th Street, including one shot in the hand, another in the head, and one in the arms. The officers were sent to Temple University Hospital.

Officials have not released the conditions of the officers at this time.

The officers were sent to the scene to serve a warrant before the shooting occurred.

Police have sectioned off several blocks and advised people to avoid the area. One person is in custody, and dozens of officers continue to engage at least one shooter in an active shooting situation.

A witness on the scene said over 100 rounds have been fired in the stand-off between police and at least one suspect. Police are trying to communicate with the suspect in an attempt to bring a peaceful end to the situation.

“The President has been briefed on the shooting in Philadelphia and continues to monitor the situation,” the White House said in a statement.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross confirmed in an 8 p.m. press conference that six officers had been shot, including one officer whose head was grazed. He said, “Fortunately, everybody’s going to be okay,” but added that the situation was ongoing.

UPDATE: The alleged gunman, 34-year-old Maurice Hill, surrendered to police around midnight after a hostage situation, according to multiple sources that spoke with a local CBS affiliate. Hill reportedly has an extensive criminal record dating back to 2003.
