Rand Paul rips omnibus: Maybe ‘holding hands’ with Democrats not such a great idea

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., made his displeasure known Saturday regarding the $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill President Trump threatened to veto, then signed on Friday.

Taking a shot at the mounting debt and sputtering stock market, Paul bemoaned Republicans “holding hands” with Democrats to get the legislation passed.

“The debt is up over a trillion the Dow is down … Maybe the GOP holding hands Democrats isn’t such a great idea,” Paul tweeted.

Though Paul initially seemed poised to prevent a vote on the bill before the weekend – a delay that would have resulted in a government shutdown – he relented despite his opposition to the size and scope of the 2,232-page document. He mocked the short time span which lawmakers had to read the bill in a live-tweeting spectacle and urged Trump to veto it.

Trump himself was unhappy with the bill he signed due to concessions that were made to Democrats, and griped about its paltry border security funding and failure to codify protections for undocumented youth.

During the signing ceremony Friday, Trump also warned that this would be the last omnibus bill he signs into law, and said the process for getting the bill to his desk this week was “ridiculous.”

“You tell me who can read that quickly,” Trump said of the 2,232-page bill. “I’m not going to do it again.”
