Would-be gamblers may have an easier time getting to Maryland’s newest casino now that a reconstructed interchange along the Baltimore/Washington Parkway is open to traffic as of noon today.
The Maryland State Highway Administration has completed construction of the state’s first diverging diamond interchange at MD 295 and Arundel Mills Boulevard, one of the main routes to Arundel Mills mall and Maryland Live.
Drivers will have to learn to navigate the diverging diamond’s unique design, which allows traffic to drive on the left side of the road to merge on and off MD 295.
The casino’s grand opening June 6 caused major traffic delays in almost all roads leading in and out of the Arundel Mills area — thousands of motorists were backed up for miles on MD 295 south of the mall, as construction of the interchange was still underway last week, according to state highway officials.
Casino officials say the interchange will alleviate the extra traffic the casino is attracting to the mall area.
State Highway Administrator Melinda Peters urged caution as motorists begin driving on the new traffic pattern.
