SAN ANTONIO (AP) — San Antonio police say a man was shot and killed by an officer responding to a car theft report.

The police department says the shooting occurred early Thursday morning on the city’s northeast side.

San Antonio police chief William McManus tells KENS that an officer saw a man crouching behind a car while responding to the report.

McManus says the man ran away and the officer followed him. He says the man jumped a fence and stopped. The man began firing at the officer, who shot back.

Authorities say the man fled, and a police helicopter later spotted his body in a nearby field. Police aren’t identifying the man.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation’s outcome, which McManus says is protocol.
