Caps back at practice this morning at Kettler Iceplex in Arlington. Some early news: Jose Theodore has been named the Masterton Trophy nominee by the Washington, D.C. chapter of the Professional Hockey Writer’s Association. The award goes to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. It is named after Bill Masterton, a defenseman with the Minnesota North Stars who died of injuries suffered during a game on Jan. 15, 1968.
Theodore and his wife, Stephanie, of course, are still grieving the loss of their son, Chace, who died last summer at two months. The 33-year-old veteran had little time to deal with that emotion because training camp started a few weeks later. Theodore is in the middle of one of his best seasons: a 29-7-7 record with a .910 save percentage and a 2.83 goals-against average. Since Jan. 13 he is 19-0-3. He has started a foundation – Saves for Kids – that benefits the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Children’s National Medical Center downtown. The Nationals honored Theodore for his work during Wednesday’s baseball game against the Phillies.
