Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Monday that moving the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem was “long overdue” and praised President Trump for finally following federal law.
“In a long overdue move, we have moved our embassy to Jerusalem,” Schumer said in a statement. “Every nation should have the right to choose its capital. I sponsored legislation to do this two decades ago, and I applaud President Trump for doing it.”
Schumer’s comments came on the heels of the official ceremony marking the move of the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which the Israeli’s declared as their capital 69 years ago. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the move “courageous” and “momentous.”
While President Trump did not attend the ceremony, Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump represented the White House at the event.
A number of Schumer’s Senate colleagues were at the official ceremony, including Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Dean Heller, R-Nev., and Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah. But no Democrats attended the event.
