Fox News contributor and former South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy reacted to Tuesday’s reports that the Senate impeachment trial of President Trump could last up to six weeks.
“Talk about cruel and unusual punishment for my fellow citizens,” Gowdy told Your World With Neil Cavuto on Tuesday. “Make them watch this group quasi-litigate this case. That is torture.”
“It’s not gonna last six weeks,” the former House Oversight Committee chairman predicted.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell rejected the possibility of the Senate voting immediately to dismiss the case. The Kentucky Republican also warned that both sides could call witnesses.
“There is literally no sentiment in the Republican conference for the motion to dismiss,” McConnell said Tuesday after a meeting with GOP senators. “Our members feel we have an obligation to listen to the arguments.”
Gowdy echoed McConnell’s position during his interview with Cavuto.
“I don’t support the motion to dismiss, because people don’t like things being summarily dismissed,” Gowdy said. “Let the House present its case … they’re the ones that want to remove a duly elected president. They have the burden of persuasion. Let them go, then you can entertain a motion to dismiss … at the end.”
