RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia high school students and teachers have wrapped up the first leg of a three-part expedition down the James River.

The James River Association is leading the James River Expedition, in which participants get a firsthand look at the role the river plays in Virginia’s culture, economy and ecology.

Teachers and students are performing tasks such as water-quality testing, biological sampling and identifying wildlife. They’re also touring some of the industrial facilities that lie along the river.

The trip’s Upper James segment launched near Covington last week, and ended Saturday in Lynchburg. A second group will leave next Saturday from Lynchburg and will reach Richmond on June 14. The final group will take off from Richmond on July 21 and land in Hampton a week later.
