Lawmaker and rape survivor fights back after extorted for stolen nude images

A Florida lawmaker and survivor of child sexual abuse is fighting back after an individual threatened to release nude photos of her.

Since 2020, stolen nude images of state Sen. Lauren Book, a Democrat, have been purchased and traded online, according to a report.

“I hate that this happened to me,” Book said. “I hate it, I hate it, I hate it, I hate it, I hate it. But I’ll take it because I know that I can do something about it.”

To fight back, Book is sponsoring legislation she hopes will prevent others from becoming victims.

The proposed legislation would bolster Florida’s revenge porn law and make it a felony crime to sell, buy, or trade explicit images from another individual’s devices, according to the report.

If signed into law, the bill would also make it a felony to disseminate doctored sexual images known as “deepfakes.”

What happened to her is sick and perverted, Book said, and it turns relatively unknown women into victims.

“Truth be told, if it weren’t for my children, I would have ended my life,” she said. “It brought up all of the stuff. All of it that you think that you’ve gotten under your belt, that you’ve fixed it and you’ve changed it, and then all of a sudden, here it is in front of your face.”

The online comments surrounding the images horrify Book, according to the report.

“They were reading about who I was and talking about how I’m a survivor of rape, so let’s try to get some rape videos. Can we get some of her getting raped, killed, tortured? Can we make some of that? Can we find it? How can we get it?” the lawmaker said.

The stolen images include pictures of Books and her husband, as well as a post-operation picture of the lawmaker’s lumpectomy scar, the report noted.
