A terminal in Long Beach Port that is one of the most technologically advanced in the world aims to have a new milestone: net zero emissions by 2030.
The port has invested $2.5 billion in clean technology over the past dozen years. The money has resulted in a terminal dedicated to storing 20-foot containers. Now, it looks like $200 million more is needed to push the project over the finish line, the Long Beach Post reported.
The additional funding will replace 270 gas-powered vehicles and install solar panels.
“As the world’s first all-electric, zero-emission mega terminal, LBCT is a model for moving cargo sustainably while keeping the Port competitive and supporting vital jobs,” said Mario Cordero, executive director of the Port of Long Beach. “It is truly a technological marvel that will allow us to increase our throughput, improve air quality and maintain our status as a leading gateway for trans-Pacific trade.”
The terminal now has automated electric cranes, a self-driving chassis to move cargo, and a power supply for ships to avoid burning fuel while in port. The facility has the largest rail connection in the nation, allowing it to load 35% of the cargo onto trains to reduce the number of trucks on the road.

For the truckers who do visit the port, they will be idling an average of 4 minutes. This is a sharp contrast to hours that they’ve spent in line at Los Angeles Port, a Washington Examiner investigation found during the supply chain crisis.
Workers at the terminals have been receiving training to utilize their skills for higher technology equipment. So far, the terminal has spent $9 million on training. That includes operating a “nerve center” that houses all the controls.

The Long Beach Container Terminal is the nation’s sixth busiest seaport. It’s capable of moving 3.3 million containers a year. It replaced two older terminals and produced half the pollution of its predecessors.
