Socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders’ lead on Donald Trump in a hypothetical general election matchup dwarfs Hillary Clinton’s advantage over the billionaire, according to a new NBC News/SurveyMonkey Weekly Election Tracking poll.

The online poll shows Sanders up 13 percentage points on Trump, 53-40, while Clinton leads Trump by 5 points, 49-44. Sanders’ lead is bolstered by young Republicans, as the poll shows 30 percent of Republicans under 30 years old would vote for Sanders over Trump.

But the same poll shows Sanders struggling to gain ground on Clinton among Democrats. Clinton leads Sanders by 12 percentage points, 53-41. Clinton’s lead is largely due to female and black voters — Clinton leads Sanders by 18 percentage points among women, 56-38, and by 36 points among black voters, 64-28.

Sanders, however, has a huge lead among young people. Sanders leads Clinton by 44 percentage points, 70-26, among those under 30. The Vermont senator also has a 15 percentage point lead, 55-40, on Clinton with independent voters who lean Democratic.

The NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll surveyed 12,714 adults — including 11,089 registered voters — from May 2 through May 8, with an 1.3 percentage point margin of error.
