AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Republican Dan Patrick and Democrat Leticia Van de Putte say they’ve agreed to a September debate in their race for Texas lieutenant governor.

Both campaigns confirmed in statements Thursday that the state senators will debate Sept. 29 in Austin. No other debates between the candidates have been planned.

Either Patrick or Van de Putte will become the state’s first new lieutenant governor in more than a decade. Republican Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst was denied a fourth term to the powerful position after losing to Patrick in the GOP primary this spring.

Just like Wendy Davis in the governor’s race, Van de Putte is trying to become the first Democrat to win a statewide office in Texas in two decades.
