Washington Teachers’ Union president killed in Easter Sunday car crash

The president of the Washington Teachers’ Union was killed in a car crash in Prince George’s County, Maryland, on Easter Sunday.

Elizabeth Davis, 70, was commuting on Sunday at around 10:30 p.m. in the Bowie area when she collided with a vehicle, Maryland State Police told the Washington Examiner.

Davis was taken to Prince George’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The driver of the other vehicle, 68-year-old John Starr, died at the scene of the crash.

The cause of the incident is still being investigated, police said.

“President Davis has been at the forefront of public education advocacy and reform, leading the WTU’s transformation into a social justice, solution-driven organization dedicated to advancing and promoting quality education for all children,” the Washington Teachers’ Union wrote in a statement.

The group said details about plans for a service honoring Davis’s life would be announced at a later date.

Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser held a moment of silence for Davis during a Monday press conference. In a statement, D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson said his “thoughts and condolences” are with Davis’s family and friends.
