Panama has enacted a coronavirus lockdown policy that will only allow one gender outside at a time.
“Starting April 1, women will circulate Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and men Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday,” President Laurentino Cortizo posted on Twitter. “On Sundays everyone should stay at home.”
Furthermore, each person in the country will only have two hours per day to visit grocery stores or the pharmacy on their respective gender-designated day, according to France 24. The rule was announced two days ago but went into effect on Wednesday and will last for at least 15 days.
The Panamanian government has taken a strong stand against those who break the strict national quarantine, with Security Minister Juan Pino claiming that there have been more than 2,000 arrests of people violating the lockdown.
“This absolute quarantine is for nothing more than to save your life,” Pino said at a news conference.
Panama has had more than 1,100 cases of coronavirus, nine recoveries, and 30 deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker.
