The Arlington County Board has passed an ordinance aimed at protecting residents from what they described as unfair towing practices in the county, setting the rate for a tow at $100.
Virginia’s General Assembly passed a law earlier this year giving counties the power to tow cars that are being moved without the consent of the owner.
Jay Fisette, the county board member who championed the ordinance, said it was necessary to stop a few towing companies from dishonest activities.
“The industry is necessary,” he said. “What’s given the industry a bad name is the rogue elements.”
The ordinance, which was passed Saturday, regulates towing fees, setting the price at $100 for towing and $40 a day for storage.
Towing had cost $95 since 1994. Police must also be notified and photographs must be taken before a company can remove a car.
Customers can now pay with a credit car and must receive a receipt.
The county board formed an advisory board to make recommendations on what the ordinance should contain in May of this year. Fisette said Fairfax County is considering a similar ordinance.
