Social media erupts over Eric Swalwell’s ad depicting woman arrested for abortion

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) sent social media users into a frenzy with a stark new campaign ad depicting a woman getting arrested for obtaining an abortion.

In the ad, a mother’s dinner with her children is interrupted by police officers who inform her that she is under arrest before pulling their guns and restraining her while her baby is heard crying in the distance. Using the MAGA battle cry, “#LockHerUp,” Swalwell said the video shows the reality of what Trump-aligned Republicans want women to face.

“MAGA Republicans want women arrested for having an abortion. This is what that looks like. #LockHerUp,” Swalwell tweeted alongside the video.

Conservatives and others quickly castigated the ad on Twitter. Some contended that anti-abortion groups do not want to arrest women for abortion but merely want to ban the procedure.

“Eric, you greasy spy f*er, Women aren’t being arrested for abortions. There is no law that does that in any state. But ads like this are absolutely going to get low information women k*lled,” Libertarian pundit Josie Glabach tweeted, referencing his alleged encounter with a Chinese spy.

“I want justice for the unborn child, yes. If that child were murdered out of the womb — someone would have to go to jail. Also, I love how they paint this mother who just killed her one child as loving toward her other kids … sad,” media personality Jessica Kramer tweeted.

Swalwell seized on her comments, citing them as proof of his point.

“I appreciate the honesty here. MAGA candidates are bullsh****ing voters that their policies won’t lock up women. Here it’s clear that’s EXACTLY the aim. Thanks, Jessica,” he replied.

“The only takeaway I get from this is Eric Swalwell has an incredibly insulting, despicable, hateful view of law enforcement. Also, Eric Swalwell is a garbage human being, but we already knew that,” conservative radio talk show host Larry O’Connor tweeted.

“100% FALSE. No abortion ban in the history of America has ever arrested women for having an abortion,” LifeNews.com wrote.

Liberal Twitter users appeared pleased with the ad, holding it up as a warning of what could happen under Republican bans on the procedure. Some also mused about a coming “Roevember,” a reference to hopes for a midterm election blowback against Republicans after the conservative-leaning Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade this summer.

“Thank you Eric Swalwell’s ad genius. This is a powerful ad,” Ohio congressional hopeful David Esrati wrote.

“This ad is chilling. I hope everyone watches it and takes the message to heart,” wrote former candidate for Manhattan District Attorney Eliza Orlins.

“The weird part is that Republicans are running the same ad, but as a good thing,” chimed in the Daily Show’s Twitter account.

Swalwell is heavily favored in his reelection campaign.

Abortion is widely regarded as a top issue energizing voters ahead of the midterm elections, but polls have pegged concerns about the economy as a leading priority among voters.
