NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) — Two first responders from western New York have been named New York’s firefighters of the year for their rescue of a man near the brink of Niagara Falls.

Capt. John Carey and firefighter Bart DeRosa will be honored Wednesday in Syracuse at the New York State Professional Fire Fighters Association’s annual convention.

Carey and DeRosa helped rescue a despondent man who’d spent six hours on a rock in the Niagara River rapids before jumping in last month. The two firefighters, wearing harnesses tethered to shore, went into the river 20 yards from the brink of the Falls and pulled him to safety.
