Donald Trump’s campaign manager has been charged with handling the presumptive Republican nominee’s search for a running mate, the Washington Post reported Tuesday.
Trump announced last week that ex-White House hopeful Ben Carson would assist with the vice presidential vetting process, but Corey Lewandowski, who has been with the Trump campaign since June, has reportedly been asked to bear most of the responsibilities.
According to the Post, Trump’s right-hand man was asked to lead the process last week and has quickly become the liaison between Trump himself and the individuals he’s considering for the vice presidential slot. Lewandowski is expected to maintain his position as campaign manager while simultaneously overseeing the vetting process.
Lewandowski’s latest appointment is yet another reflection of the unorthodox campaign Trump has run. Previous candidates have typically tasked a team of attorneys to oversee what can be an incredibly invasive process, and Lewandowski has no background in law.
Nevertheless, Trump told the Post earlier this month that his campaign would likely follow a “standard vetting” process and work “people that do this professionally.”
“We’ll have standard vetting questions and there are firms that could help us do this,” the billionaire said.
Trump announced last week that he plans to reveal his running mate at the Republican National Convention in July.
Lewandowski did not return the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
