Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., is expected to announce his re-election bid to secure his seat next week.
CNN reports that sources are telling them Rubio is in Florida for Father’s Day weekend talking over his Senate re-election run with his family and will be making an announcement in the coming days.
Rubio supposedly had no plans to return to the Senate after failing in his campaign for president. With increased pressure to maintain the GOP’s majority in the high chamber in November, it Rubio’s return could brighten GOP prospects.
“The Florida senator is telling top supporters he has changed his mind — and will run for re-election to the Senate,” reported CNN’s John King. “This change of heart will be a boost to Republican hopes of holding their Senate majority after a tough couple of weeks.”
Lagging support for Donald Trump in some key states has some strategists worried that it could hurt incumbent GOP senators in those states. Florida had been a concern since Rubio had planned to drop out in 2016.
